Understanding Breast Cancer - Signs, Causes, and Treatment Approaches

Breast cancer is a condition caused by uncontrolled growth of breast cells, leading to the formation of malignant tumors capable of invading surrounding tissues and spreading to distant areas. It is the most common cancer among women. Let's explore the risks, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer.

Under normal circumstances, breast cells are produced and eliminated according to a predetermined cycle, balancing cell production with cell death. This mechanism maintains the correct number of breast cells. However, gene mutations can disrupt this balance. When certain conditions allow these mutated cells to bypass immune system control, they grow uncontrollably, forming tumors with abnormal cells. These tumors are malignant and known as breast cancer. These cancerous cells can infiltrate blood vessels, lymphatic tissues, and metastasize to distant regions.

Essential Information on Breast Cancer: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer often develops gradually, with tumors forming without visible symptoms at first. Women are encouraged to self-examine their breasts regularly to recognize any changes early. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain: Pain unrelated to menstruation, in one breast, or persistent.

  • Changes in Breast and Nipple Skin: Thickening, roughness, or redness; breast skin may appear swollen or tense. The nipple may retract inward.

  • Discharge or Bleeding from the Nipple: Unexpected discharge or bleeding, often in one breast, possibly accompanied by pain.

Lumps in the Breast or Armpit: These lumps may be fixed or mobile, vary in size, and could be painful or painless.

Causes of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer arises from gene mutations that lead to uncontrolled cell reproduction. Reasons for these genetic mutations include:

  • Genetic Predisposition: Approximately 5-7% of cases have hereditary causes, while more than 90% result from environmental and lifestyle factors.

  • Risk Factors: Age (over 50), late childbirth (over 30), family history, early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after age 55), smoking, and alcohol consumption. Additionally, women with dense breast tissue, those who had chest radiation therapy before age 30, or those who are overweight may be at higher risk.

Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

Diagnosing breast cancer typically involves:

  • Fine-Needle Aspiration: Examines cell morphology in breast tissue.

  • Breast Biopsy: Evaluates tissue structure within the breast.

  • Immunohistochemistry and Genetic Testing: Conducted post-diagnosis to assess cancer characteristics and malignancy. Based on these tests, the cancer stage is determined by the tumor's size and invasiveness (Tumor), lymph node involvement (Node), and metastasis presence (Metastasis).

Breast Cancer Treatment

Breast cancer has various treatment options, chosen based on the cancer stage, biological characteristics of the tumor, and the patient’s health. Treatments include:

  • Surgery: Removes the breast tumor, often including lymph nodes. Options include partial (tumor-only) or complete mastectomy (entire breast removal).

  • Radiation Therapy: Uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. Applied to prevent recurrence or alleviate symptoms in advanced cases.

  • Chemotherapy: For both early-stage and metastatic breast cancer, to reduce recurrence risk or tumor size, improving surgical success.

  • Targeted Therapy: For HER2-positive cancers, using drugs like trastuzumab to target cancer cells specifically.

  • Hormone Therapy: Blocks estrogen receptors to prevent cancer cell growth.

  • Immunotherapy: Recently combined with chemotherapy for advanced cases to improve outcomes.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. While breast cancer incidence rates are rising, the mortality rate is declining due to advancements in early detection and multi-modal treatment approaches. Effective breast cancer treatment may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, selected according to the tumor's stage, type, and patient health.
